Community center plan scaled back

Micaela Montez and her neighbors in San Jose's Hoffman-Via Monte neighborhood were promised a 2,400-square-foot community center to provide after-school and recreation programs for children and English as a second language classes for adults.

What they got Tuesday was a 900-square-foot space between a salon and doughnut shop on Blossom Hill Road.

In its vote Tuesday, the San Jose City Council abandoned for now a plan to install a modular building on property owned by a neighborhood church because the project bids were extremely over budget. Instead, the council unanimously voted to lease space at 1180 Blossom Hill Road, near Almaden Plaza. The cost of the five-year lease, which can be renewed, will be $190,000.

Though disappointed that the No. 1 priority for the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative area was shelved for now, some members of the community said that at least the store-front is something they can use soon.
